Designing a Nation - Alexandria

The nation I designed for this project is called Alexandria.
The goal of the project was for the principles, ideas, and imagined culture to inform the visual design for the currency.

In Alexandria, an understanding of the arts, science, history, and literature are fundamental to being a citizen. Education at every level is free, and anyone has the opportunity to gain Alexandrian citizenship. All that is required to become a citizen is an interest to live as a part of such a community, which comes with free access to all libraries, galleries, theaters and archives. Technology is celebrated and used to create an A.l. database of cultural and historically significant figures both dead and alive to understand the values of their ideas and their contribution to the world. In Alexandria, important societal figures thoughts are studied and celebrated in a vast library that allows conversations between citizens and those on the database. My nation is one in which you can chose to live at permanently or visit to request a residency at to study the Alexandrian archives and galleries - the pursuit of knowledge is for everyone.

I used no actual typography on the currency because I imagined the nation having developed its own unique language due to the fact that people are migrating to Alexandria from all across the globe over a long period of time. The national flag design includes the golden rectangle and the pink ibis. The visual reference to the golden ratio highlights the importance of historic reference and reverence in Alexandrian society. The pink ibis is included as a national symbol to point to both wisdom and community as core tenants of the culture.
